May 29, 2005

Sunday night caused a rough start to the storm chasing trip. I had run errands all day and was trying to wind down to rest for the long drive the next day, when Sugar Land/Missouri City was hit by severe storms. I had gone out to check the skies once more before bed…this was at about 11pm. I saw a flash of green to my South. Knowing what that meant I went right down the road to the school parking lot to get a view of the South. I watched as green flashes of lightning continued. The rain began and then was accompanied by strong winds as my little Malibu rocked a bit from the wind. The green lightning shifted right over my house and I got a frantic call from my sister and fellow storm chaser, Carrie. She was telling me to get home. Apparently the trees were going wild, rotation was detected as I suspected and she could hear the wind howling. After I got back the lights started going on and off for about an hour. Couldn’t sleep with it doing that. So after the electricity finally went completely off, I was woken up by the crews working to restore power. GRRR!!!! So I basically had a few hours sleep and our goal was to be on the road by 5am. Trees were down everywhere. It took 11 large trash bags to clean up our small backyard from big branches and small tree that ended up in our yard from a neighbors yard.
